Clearwell Caves

Iron ore has been wun here for over 4,000 years and is still operating today, where caverns can be explored. A tea room and shop is available. At Halloween, there is a fancy dress party and for Christmas, the Caves are transformed into a spectacular 'Christmas Fantasy' Open: 1 Mar-31 Oct. Daily: 10am-5pm (last entry). Christmas Fantasy 1-24. Dec. daily: similar times. Clearwell, near Coleford.

Monmouth

When visiting Monmouth, you'll see historic Monnow Bridge, dating from the 13th century; the only complete example of its kind in Britain. The town hosts an impressive market place and 18th century hall, as well as the birthplace of Henry V, a museum collection dedicated to Lord Nelson, a splendid statue of Charles Rolls (one half of the Rolls-Royce dynasty) and The Kymin - a splendid viewpoint over the whole area.

Raglan Castle

Raglan, with its great multi-angular towers and Tudor-styling, is unlike any other castle in Wales. It was begun by Sir William ap Thomas, a veteran of the French wars, who grew wealthy through exploiting his position as a local agent of the Duke of York in south-east Wales. About 1435 he began building the Great Tower, subsequently known as the Yellow Tower of Gwent, probably on the site of a much earlier Norman motte-and-bailey castle. Raglan is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and beautiful castles in Britain.

Gloucester Cathedral

The Cathedral is an architectural gem, full of magnificent works of art and reminders of history. God has been worshipped on the site for over 1300 years. It is possible at certain times to climb to the top of the tower for a superb and far reaching view.

Tintern Abbey

The ruins of Tintern Abbey lie between the River Wye and the A466 road at the southern edge of Tintern Village. This is a beautiful area and the ruins are now looked after carefully and receive a good number of visitors. Maintenance is often underway to prevent further deterioration of the fabric. Dean Heritage Centre

The centre has four galleries which explain the history of Dean's culture and environment. Woodland walks, playground, café, picnic area and shops available, as well as a children's activity room. Open daily: April to October 10am to 5pm. November to March: 11am to 4pm (last admissions) Closed 24-26 December and 1 January. Camp Mill, Soudley, near Cinderford.

Hopewell Colliery Museum

Walk through a true Forest of Dean Freemine. See mine workings, some date from the 1820's. See the old mine working tools on display and visit the cafe. Open every day from 10am to 4.30pm (March to October). Last complete tour starts at 3.30pm. Party bookings by arrangement. On B4226 between Coleford and Speech House Road.
